Vocational and Technology Education Programme

History of the Programme:

The Vocational and Technology Education Programme started as a unit of the then Science Education Programme in 1989/90 session with a degree programme in Electrical/Electronics Technology Education. Metalwork Technology Education was later introduced in 1997/98 session. The programme witnessed rapid expansions within the next few years that led to the introduction of Automobile Technology Education, Woodwork Technology Education, Building Technology Education, Agricultural Education and Business Education courses. At the beginning of 2003/2004 academic session, the then Science Education Programme was upgraded to the School of Technology Education Technology and Vocational programme became an autonomous Programme.

Vision:

In line with the vision of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University the Vocational and Technology Education Programme seeks to become a great centre of excellence from where qualitative technical and vocational teachers can be produced for the advancement of technology in Nigeria and the world at large.

Mission:

The mission of the Vocational and Technology Education Programme, of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, is to be a centre of excellence and provider of first choice in quality technical and vocational teacher education programme using well articulated facilities, well motivated and highly skilled human resources to meet the imperative needs of individual and the economy.

Degrees Awarded:

The Vocational and Technology Education Programme has a mandate to train highly skilled personnel in the various areas of Technical and Vocational Education for educational, industrial, and economic development of the nation. The programme currently awards B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD Degrees in the following areas of specializations:

      Agricultural Education

      Business Education (with options in Accounting and Management)

      Construction Technology Education (with options in Building, Drafting and Wood Technology)

      Electrical/Electronics Technology Education

      Mechanical Technology Education (with options in Automobile and Production Technology)

      Bachelor of Technology Degree in Agricultural Education

The objectives of Agricultural Education Programme are, to:

 

  • provide a course of instruction and all necessary facilities and exposure for the pursuit and acquisition of learning and knowledge for services to humanity.
  • provide adequate educational foundation for interested graduates to pursue higher degree in Agricultural Education or other relevant areas in Education.
  • enable the student teachers acquire the fundamental knowledge of Agricultural Education concepts, principles, theories, laws and conceptual schemes;
  • enable the student teachers acquire necessary teaching and practical skills and other aspects of teaching methodology of their subject;
  • acquaint the student teachers with the ethics of teaching as profession and hence become professional Agriculture Educator;
  • develop positive values and attitudes for efficient discharge of their duty as teachers; and
  • provide adequate training for graduates to be self reliant and entrepreneuria

Admission into this programme would be by Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) modes.

 

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Candidates must possess five (5) credit passes in English Language, Mathematics/Arithmetic, Biology/Agricultural Science/General Science and any other two relevant subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO), National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), Teachers’ College Grade II Certificate, General Certificate Examination (GCE) at the Ordinary Level or its equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings and either of the followings;

 

  • (a) an acceptable pass mark at the UTME conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science and any other relevant subject

 

  • (b) NCE at Pass level (CGPA of less than 2.40) in Agriculture/Biology as a double major or in combination with other teaching subject but without a post graduation experience

 

 

Direct Entry (DE)

Candidates seeking admission through this mode should, in addition to the UTME O’ Level requirements possess either of the followings;

 

  • NCE with at least an overall pass at Merit/ Lower Credit level (CGPA of not less than 2.40) in Agriculture as a double major

 

  • NCE with at least an overall pass at Merit/ Lower Credit level (CGPA of not less than 2.40) in Biology and any other science subject

 

  • NCE at Pass level (CGPA of less than 2.40) in Agriculture/Biology as a double major or in combination with other teaching subject with at least two years post graduation experience

 

  • OND/ND with at least an overall pass at Merit/ Lower Credit level (CGPA of not less than 2.40) in Biology/Agriculture and any other science subject from a recognised Institution with at least two years post graduation experience

 

Advanced Level passes at Credit level in Biology/Botany/Zoology/Agricultural Science, plus any other relevant subjects

The following may qualify for admission into the specified Postgraduate programmes:


A. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

i) Graduates of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University or other recognized universities with at least Second class honours degree. ii) Holders of any other qualifications together with relevant field experience as deemed acceptable to the University.
iii)
 Holders of HND with at least a Credit Pass.


B. Master Degree


i) Graduates of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University who have obtained the approved first degree with at least second class honours (with CGPA of 3.00) or its equivalent; or candidates with University honours degree and appropriate postgraduate diplomas of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University or other recognized universities with at least a Credit Pass.

ii)
 Candidates whose degrees are classified as an average of C or above

iii)
 Candidates who possess Higher National Diploma with at least a credit pass from recognized institutions and at least a credit pass of postgraduate diploma of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in the relevant areas at upper credit level. iv) Candidates may be required to sit for a qualifying examination either before approval of registration.


C. Master of Philosophy (M. PhD) and Masters by Research Degrees


i)
 Graduates of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University or other recognized institutions who have obtained the approved first degree with at least second class honours (upper division).

ii)
 A good second class honours degree plus a considerable relevant industrial experience.

D. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree


i)
 Graduates of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University who hold Masters Degree appropriate for the proposed areas of study with at least (CGPA of 3.5).

ii)
 Graduates of other recognized universities who hold higher degrees considered by the university to be an equivalent.

iii)
 Candidates for the PhD programmes may be required to pass a qualifying examination and/or undergo a probationary period not exceeding 12 calendar months.
